Ubuntu (Or Linux mint , for that purpose) is a good and prevalent linux distro, But is having some hidden setting which are not easy to figure out for a newbie. We noticed a problem on first installing ubuntu that it couldn’t connect Using PPPOE to the internet using GUI. After some hits and trials, we got to the core of it, and figured a way to connect. here’s how…

1. Open SYSTEM->Terminal

2. now write Sudo pppoeconf and press Enter. Your ADSL modem should be ON and stable( Yellow DSL Light stable,NOT blinking)

3. Authenticate your action by typing your LINUX account password.

4. Now enter Internet connection account Username.

5. Enter your password and follow the instructions and select YES when asked to activate the connection. that’s all.

6. You are connected now.

How to start your computer at certain time?

Method 1. Use BIOS Built-in feature: Many BIOS have features to auto start the system at certain specified time. This window can’t be closed by other means. To shutdown, Type “Shutdown –a” and this will kill the dialog box that has opened. In windows 7 there will just be a pop-up in the system Tray instead of dialog box.

For advanced users, you can create a batch file with the “At 08:00…” statement and put it in the start-up folder of windows.

How to auto start the Downloads?

All you need to do is to set the “Scheduling options” in the download manager or torrent client you use to start download at few minutes after you have set your computer to auto-start.

500 GB on a DVD-sized disk! That’s what growing exponentially is!

WoW!!! That was the first words that sailed though my brain when i first heard of it. Not because i was finding a solution to store my collection of movies on, or making a backup of my system, instead it was because i was happy that the world had found seen something that actually was witnessing EXPONENTIAL growth over the years. optical storage media! Not many months had passed with the Blu-Ray coming into the reach of common people, and here we see another development in the storage media sector.

General Electric or GE has demoed an optical disc which can up to 500GB of data and possibly even more. The new disc has the same size as conventional DVDs, but it can hold the equivalent of 100 DVD discs or 20 single-layer Blu-ray discs. The micro-holographic disc developed by GE represents the next-gen in optical storage, however, the company says that their discs will soon be entering the market and users will use players similar to DVD or Blu-ray disc players.

GE experts are using holographic techniques to store data in a 3D format rather than the conventional methods of storing data into layers. Conventionally, the data is written in the form of Ones or Zeroes embedded on the layers. The telegraph reads and writes data the same way like today’s discs do with data burnt and read using lasers. Lately mass storage has been possible using shorter and shorter wavelength lasers.

But this is something else. Abandoning the traditional ‘pits and groove’ method data is burnt in a holographic way that is 3D volumetric patterns using chemical methods. These discs are made of special polycarbonate materials and the material changes its chemical composition when bombarded by a certain type of laser. These discs are read by optical drives very similar to those for reading BluRay discs having special kind of laser. The company claims that these optical drives can be made compatible to read CDs , DVDs and BluRays.

A pair of laser beams is used to write data into discs of light-sensitive plastic, with both aiming at the same spot. One beam shines continuously, while the other pulses on and off to encode patches that represent digital 0s and 1s.

At the points where the lasers meet, the intense light causes molecules in the disc's material to merge into chains, creating a physical pattern that locks the 0s and 1s into the disc. This pattern can be read back at a later date using another laser because the changed patches interact differently with light.

However, in the plastic normally used for holographic data storage, the s tructural changes caused by the laser also cause the material to shrink. Even though the volume change is tiny - around 0.23% - the distortion is enough to make reading the data from the disc tricky and means that the 1s and 0s can't be burned at the highest densities.

This also suggests that the disk without any protective covering, will be extremely prone to data loss due to minor scratches also.

Retrieve your forgotten windows passwords. [Tutorial For the month]

How many time have you had your windows logon screen staring at you in hostility? Just ‘cause you forgot or mis-spelt your windows account password! Almost all of us have faced such situation where we throw our fingers at the keyboard relentlessly just to crack that password!

One walkthrough to this situation is if we have our Administrator account enabled(by default) and unaltered( without password ). It makes sense to hit ctrl+alt+Del a few times at logon screen where it asks for the password. This switches the welcome screen to classic style where you have to manually enter the username and password. Just type Administrator in the username and keep the password blank and hit enter. you’ll get in! then create a new administrator account from the control panel. but what in case you had password protected the administrator account earlier and now you don’t remember it??? There’s another workaround and very efficient one too! Ophcrack live CD 2.1.0

How to…?

Just burn the disk image you download from here onto a blank CD. It is bootable hence you need to boot your system using this disk. DO make sure you download the Live cd for the correct operating system you use.

To set your system boot using CD

Step 1. Just after you power-on your Pc, and while its starting up, hit DEL a few times. this should bring up a Blue screen with settings. This is your Bios(Basic Input Output System) setup screen.

Step 2. Just search for “Boot settings”( or related) on the displayed screen. Take your cursor to it using the directional key and press Enter.

Step 3. take cursor to the “First Boot device” and press “+” ( or refer to keys on the screen help) till you find your CD ROM. press F10 and press Enter.

Now, just insert the Ophcrack live cd you burnt earlier in Your drive and restart the system. The system will boot using the CD you burnt.

-You’ll see a simple desktop screen. Let it function automatically and a window will pop up which will show your Operating system password for every user account.

-Eject your disk and restart the system and now you can logon with the password the magical application just retrieved for you.Note: At our Testlabs, we found that most of the password types were retrieved but it was unable to retrieve the passwords composed of only spaces. we mean that the password field was blank without any indication that whether the password has been retrieved or not.

The Final verdict!

This is one of the most efficient tool over the years which retrieves passwords for a system by efficient implementation of Rainbow tables. Google Street View is a feature of Google maps and Google earth that provides for many streets in the world 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic views from a row of positions along the street (one in every 10 or 20 meters, or so), from a height of about two meters. It was launched on May 25, 2007, and has gradually expanded to include more cities, and in these cities more streets, and also some rural areas. These photographs are currently available for countries including United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Coverage is shown by dragging "pegman" from its position, on a map of any scale. Pegman is an animated character which sails over the google maps as you navigate.

Thumbnail view provides and easy way to explore through all the images & pictures contained in a folder in a single go, but if you have low system memory then using this feature can become a bit of a drain on your system. For faster exploring, it is possible to lower the thumbnail size and quality by a simple registry trick. Just Follow the simple tricks!

Step 1: Go to start and click on RUN.

Step 2: Type “REGEDIT”

Step 3: This will Open the registry. In the left pane, navigate to :

“ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer “

Step 4: Create a new DWORD value called ThumbnailSize, and set the value between 32 and 256. ( This reduces the size of thumbnails in Explorer. Something around 45 will be fine)

Step 5:And/or create another DWORD value called ThumbnailQuality, and set the value between 50 and 100. ( This sets the quality of thumbnails! )

This simple Editing will reduce the load on the system while you browse in thumbnail view.

Make the most out of your XP system!

Here i will give you some awesome( for a few, LAME!) tricks that can help you make the most out of your XP based system. In this article i will basically stick to tricks for increasing accessibility in XP and thereby making it more user friendly for you!

TRICK/TIP 1 Keep an easily accessible folder for copying files any time using the “SEND TO” menu.

STEP 1: For this trick, just create a folder of any name in your program files folder or any other place so that its location is not easily guessable by others accessing your pc. It can be either your c:\windows folder or any location of your choice.

STEP 2: Go to “folder options” in “tools” option of your m enu bar, click “VIEW” and check “show hidden files and folders” so that all hidden folders are visible now.

STEP 3: Now go to “ C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\SendTo” where USERNAME is the current user which is logged-in!

STEP 4: Create a new shortcut to the folder you had created in step one by any name! ( you can also go to the folder and click “Send to” on its right click menu and select “DESKTOP”. now cut the shortcut from the desktop and paste it in the send to folder in step 3.

there you go! Now you can right click on any folder or file in windows explorer and click “Send to” and select the name of the shortcut you made in step 4! the file or folder will be copy pasted in that folder! so now you have a secret folder to paste files in!

TRICK/TIP 2 Access your favorite programs by just typing their first alphabets in RUN.

This trick is pretty simple to do and is very useful when you want to amaze your friends with your XP friendliness. suppose you want to access Firefox but do not want its icon to clutter space on your desktop then how it would be if you could just type “F” in the RUN and get Firefox running?? sounds cool??? herez how to do it!

Step 1: Just select Firefox ( or any other application) shortcut from the desktop and rename it by pressing F2 key to the first alphabet of its name ( for example: “F” for Firefox).

STEP 2: Now cut the shortcut and paste it into “c:\Windows\System32”

here you go. you can now access firefox just by typing “F” in the RUN.( access RUN by pressing “Win+R” ).

TRICK/TIP 3 To completely hide the folder

STEP 1: Click on it(single) then press F2(for rename).

STEP 2: Now hold ALT key and pres 0160 then hit the enter.

STEP 3: Now right click on that folder go to properties -go to customize -> click on change icon -> scroll among the icons and you can find a blank space for icon ->select it.so it will done. To make it more effective right click on it go to properties set attributes to hidden.

all these simultaneous actions requires your windows system to open many outbound ports and bind them i.e in simpler words, windows allows many connections to different applications at the same time.
But have you ever realized that Windows by default only allows 10 outbound connection attempts at a time?
This can restrict bittorrent applications from performing at full speeds. A simple patching utility can fix the problem and speed up your BitTorrent downloads.

Microsoft first introduced these limits into Windows to prevent viruses and worms from spreading—because they try and connect to thousands of addresses at a time looking for security holes. What ended up happening instead is a restriction on your BitTorrent downloads, especially from busy torrents where your machine may need to connect to plenty of other systems at once.

Only scanners do well when it comes to getting a soft copy of the matter you hold in hand. what if you do not have a scanner with you?? wish there should be some cheaper way to get the job done?
Snapter to the rescue!
This 11 mb application will need you to take a snap of your documents using a descent digital camera and it will process the image into better looking copies which can be used as a substitute to the soft copies of your matter. though it also depends a great deal on the way you held the camera, and the quality of the picture you just snapped, but snapter also provides some correcting means and methods to get improved picture quality. all you have to make sure is that you keep the document on a table with differentiating and single color and no other object should come into view.

In our tests, it proved to work just fine only if you have good light arrangements in the room and a prety descent camera.
But it can be a good tool if you're struck in a state of emergency and urgently need a scanner.

4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.

5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.

6. Launch RegEdit.

7. Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

8. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents

9. Reboot Windows XP.

Hope it solved you problem and the nag no longer bothers you.

Rename multiple files without hassles. (Platform: Win XP)

Had you ever been in a situation when you had selected a few files out of a collection of hundreds and just needed to distinguish them from others? in case of image management a trick might come handy. A simple trick will help you do so without any hassles!
Without using any software it’s easy to rename all files in a folder and get them organized in a sequence.
Just Select all the files in a folder that you need to distinguish or bulk rename( holding Ctrl and clicking on desired files), then right click on any file and select Rename. Rename the file which u had right clicked to any name you want to be used as a prefix to other files. for example, rename the file to "my picture" and Hit enter and the other files will be renamed automatically to my picture(1), my picture(2)...and so on.
just in case you want to remane files as (1),(2),(3)...then while renaming the selected file juss press Alt+255 and then press enter. All other files-folder selected will be automatically renamed to (2), (3), ..and so on. But u’ll see that the file which u selected for rename has no visible name-rename it to "1".

Alt+255 is used to allow a folder to have no visible name( a space instead).

This trick comes handy for better organization of files on you PC.
